For a time he was apprenticed in his father's corset small business. He then invested time doing work in an excise workplace in Grantham, Lincolnshire and later on Lewes, East Sussex. In 1871, he married his 1st spouse, Elizabeth Olive. All-around this period, Tomas Paine grew to become ever more interested in local political issues. He was concerned in a regional Vestry church which collected taxes and tithes to distribute to the poor.In 1772, Paine grew to become energetic in a campaign to press for much better working practises for excise duty personnel. This led to his first publication The Case of the Officers of the Excise.
